I don't understand a paragraph in The Sisterhood of the Travleing Pants ..can anyone explain it?

Hmmm.... Maybe it was because she was such a good soccer player, that they wanted her to miss stopping the goal, or something. Was her team ahead in the match? If so, maybe they wanted the goal to be a sympathy thing.
