Why do shy guys mess with ur mind?

this shy guy i like (hes not neccessarily shy as in turns red everytime he talks, shy as in hes inexperienced, never had a gf, doesnt really show emotions that well) i have days where i dont think he likes me (he knows i like him, found out through the gvine) where he ignores me, doesnt look at me at all, so i give up thinking about him. (i am not adept enough to tell if hes lookin at me when im lookin away, anyway thats way too exhausting) but then right when i give up hope he does somethin random like brush my shoulders when helpin me when he dont need to, pat my back while NOT lookin at me, says hi to me all the time, asks me random questions about myself where he must have heard the info from gossip of other people bc ive never told him, then i finally catch him lookin at me for longer than 2 seconds...its so aggravating!
